Aging At A Snail’s Pace

Birthdays are always a reason to celebrate. They mark another year of potential achievements and spending more time with family and friends- not to mention all the presents! And yet, approaching birthdays also come with some anxiety: another year means a few more wrinkles here, age spots there, and skin that’s less radiant than it used to be.

Aging is a natural process and it’s something that every person goes through. But why are there people who look like they haven’t aged at all?

Nature Versus Nurture

At the heart of aging is cell damage. While cells have the natural ability to heal themselves, this declines as we age. Our genetic make up plays a part in skin aging, particularly, our predisposition to hyperpigmentation and Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL)* . But, don’t fret –that only accounts for a very small percentage! About 90% of skin aging is attributed to other factors.

One’s diet – particularly, eating unhealthy, highly processed food – is one of the biggest contributors to aging. Opt for wholesome alternatives and include plenty of antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables to your diet. These antioxidants help fight free radicals that cause cell damage. Healthy monounsaturated fats found in avocado, nuts, and olive oil, as well as omega 3 fatty acids found in salmon and other fish, help keep the skin hydrated, plump, and younger-looking. Don’t forget to get your daily dose of magnesium, copper, selenium and other minerals through your food or supplements – these help promote skin elasticity.

Bad habits, particularly smoking and drinking, take their toll on your health and ultimately, your looks. Cigarettes are loaded with toxic substances that damage your cells, and the repetitive facial movements will cause even more wrinkles, particularly around the mouth. Alcohol dehydrates the entire body, and regular consumption damages cells over time. If you mustcelebrate with bubbly, limit your intake, and have red wine when you can. It contains antioxidants and resveratrol which have heart health and anti-aging benefits.

Excessive and unprotected sun exposure never did anyone good. UV rays cause a host of skin problems associated with aging such as crow’s feet, age spots, uneven skin tone, and more. Over time, UV rays damage the elastin in our skin, leading to wrinkles and sagging. Avoid going out in the sun if and when you can, and never leave home without putting on sunblock.

Prevent, Repair, and Rejuvenate

Don’t want to resort to surgery, botox, and other artificial means? Having a proper skincare regimen and choosing the right products are essential to keeping the signs of aging at bay, as well reversing them. Thoroughly removing make-up, gentle cleansing, toning and hydrating, and moisturizing are a must. If you have special concerns and needs, use eye cream

and serums that are chock full of special ingredients. Look for products with ingredients such as copper peptides, hyaluronic acid, and glycolic acid which boost collagen production, hydrate skin, and rejuvenate cells. All three and more are present in snail filtrate , which has been found to effectively – and amazingly – address wrinkles, skin discoloration and blemishes, irritation, and a myriad of other skin problems.
